The Faculty of the VCA and Music proudly presents The University of Melbourne Symphony Orchestra in a Gala Concert on 30 April at the Melbourne Town Hall. The evening holds particular significance as it is the first major concert by the students of the new Faculty of VCA and Music since its formation earlier this month.
This impressive program of orchestral works is a wonderful opportunity to see Melbourne’s most talented group of young orchestral musicians, 124 strong, as they perform under esteemed conductors Marco van Pagee and Benjamin Northey. A highlight of the program will be the performance of Nielsen’s Flute Concerto featuring award-winning soloist Jessica Jiang.
In May 2008, the University Council decided that the Faculty of Music and the Faculty of the Victorian College of the Arts would be amalgamated from 6 April 2009, creating the Faculty of the VCA and Music. The Faculty comprises over 1,700 full time students and brings together a wide range of creative disciplines within the schools of Art, Music and Performing Arts as well as offering programs in Film and Television. The University of Melbourne School of Music is the largest and most comprehensive music school in Australia.
