1 These conditions apply to all users of computers, The University of Melbourne Network and data communication facilities within the VCA and The University of Melbourne;
2 No person may use the computing or network facilities unless they have prior authorisation;
3 Students must use the facilities only for academic purposes;

All users must:

  • obey directions of authorised members of staff;
  • obey instructions regarding logging, documenting or otherwise controlling the use of equipment;
  • not permit another person to have access to the users account;
  • not assist or encourage any other person to obtain unauthorised access to accounts;
  • not interfere with equipment, software or its use, or files or data;
  • report machine malfunctions or failure or network fault or suspected malicious data corruption immediately;
  • not remove materials from the premises except materials supplied or produced for the individual users sole benefit;
  • observe access restrictions to designated areas;
  • ensure their use does not involve infringement of patent and/or copyright in software and does not disclose proprietary information provided under licence by I.T. vendors.
5 No person may reserve equipment of facility including desk and bench space
6 Undue noise or disturbance is not permitted
7 Aisles, passages and stairways must be kept clear
8 Premises, housing and computer facilities must not be used for any form of sale, advertisement or exhibition without prior written approval of the Dean/head of School.
9 Electronic mail may only be used for legitimate VCA purposes, and must conform with the VCA/University policies regarding acceptable behaviour
10 The VCA makes no warranty as to the suitability and/or availability of the VCA computer facilities and equipment for the particular purpose or use by others.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Any person using the VCA computing and network facilities who contravenes the rules or wilfully misuses the facilities or is negligent and thereby causes loss of, or damage to such facilities is liable for that loss or damage and is liable for the charges payable for any unauthorised use of facility services at the rate applicable to any user without regard to status and may be required to repay or reimburse the VCA for the cost of replacement or repair of any facility or service.

Contravention of the rules by students is misconduct which may cause a student to be subject to the disciplinary powers as set out in Statute 13 of the University Statutes.

Use of Staff Computers by Students

Staff should be aware of their responsibilities in this area.

The following points should be noted:

  • Staff members are responsible for use of the software contained on the computers installed on individual computers by the VCA. Please ensure that students using your computer do not download and install other software on your computer.
  • In general it is recommended that students are not permitted to use staff computers.
  • Staff should also be aware of their obligations to the University of Melbourne regarding the use of the computing network and associated facilities.
