May 2006 Printmaking Exhibiton/Japan Exchange
Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music and VCA staff and student exchange, sponsored by the Victorian State Government.
Between April and June 2006, artists from the Printmaking Department at the VCA School of Art will be involved in an exchange with the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music as part of the 30th Anniversary of the Japan Nara (Friendship) Treaty - Year of Exchange.
The 2006 Australia-Japan Year of Exchange commemorates the 30th anniversary of the signing of the 1976 Basic Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation between Australia and Japan. The aim of the year is to promote friendship, deeper mutual understanding and cooperation between Australia and Japan.
Instigated by Neil Malone, Head of Printmaking at the VCA School of Art, Cassandra Mizuno graduate of the VCA’s printmaking department in collaboration with Professor Noda Tetsuya, Head of Printmaking at the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music, and sponsored by the State Government, this exchange of creative knowledge includes an exhibition and artists’ residency in Tokyo and Melbourne. It will also provide an opportunity for the two institutions to develop a relationship with obvious long-term advantages including cross-cultural research projects and joint approaches to curriculum development.
The exchange of prints, techniques, artists and teachers between the two institutions started in Tokyo on March 31 when Malone and colleague, Julie Irving (Lecturer in Printmaking at the VCA), travel to Tokyo to participate in traditional Japanese wood block printing workshops in addition to an exhibition on April 18 at Chinretsukan Gallery, The University Museum at Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music. This is important new knowledge for both artists/teachers that will be shared with the VCA community on their return.
The exhibition will then come to Melbourne to be shown in the Printmaking Department gallery of the VCA School of Art from May 22 2006 with the participation of Associate Professor Takemi Azumaya from Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music as a guest lecturer and resident artist at the VCA.
