The Foundation Program (Music Performance) recognises and addresses the need to provide a course of study for those whose performance skills show potential but who have not attained the required standard in practical and/or theoretical studies for admission to the degree course in this school.
All participants are expected to undertake self-directed practice as recommended by the Coordinator in order to be able to meet the requirements of the program.
The full foundation program comprises 6 units taken over one year of 24 weeks. Three streams are offered: Repertoire, Improvisation and Composition
On completion of the course, students should have;
Entry is based on audition. Candidates must perform three contrasting works on their principal study instrument as well as sight read a short piece and undergo a short performance related studies test (viva voce format). The audition is scheduled for approximately 15 minutes and applicants must provide their own accompanist.
Successful completion of all courses in the School demands self-discipline, commitment and perseverance, all of which relate to a positive attitude towards the study program.
Attendance is one factor taken into consideration for assessment and a minimum attendance rate of 80% is a hurdle requirement for all students. More than 20% of classes missed is deemed as a non-pass. Where extenuating circumstances cause attendance to fall below the requirements, this may constitute grounds for Special Consideration for which a formal application can be made.
To this end, attendance at all classes, scheduled rehearsals and performances is regarded as essential and students are obliged to have a clear understanding of the School’s policy regarding attendance.
