Overview

The Master of Production (by Course work) provides a structured coursework program enabling high achieving students of the Postgraduate Diploma in Production to progress to a Masters award. The streams in the Postgraduate Diploma in Production continue in the Masters year. The subjects in the Master of Production (by coursework)are articulated from the Postgraduate Diploma in Production.

Objectives

To:

  • Further develop technical and creative skills and understanding;
  • Develop understanding and use of theoretical frameworks to evaluate and critique specific elements used in the development of a performance, such as design, crafts, management, puppetry;
  • As a senior member of the collaborative team, develop a capacity to evaluate, discriminate and make informed choices within both a pragmatic and artistic framework;
  • Develop abilities to collaborate;
  • Develop an understanding and exploration of the performing arts as a communicative mode;
  • Develop an understanding and exploration of the potentials of diverse media in performance.

Prerequisites

The Selection Committee will evaluate the applicant's ability to pursue successfully the course using the following criterion-

Either a Postgraduate Diploma in Production, with the average grade of at least H2B (70%) and a grade of H1 (80%) in project work, or equivalent, or at least five years of documented relevant professional experience.

The Selection Committee may conduct interviews or tests and may call for referee reports and employer references to elucidate any of the matters referred to above.

Generic Skills

At the completion of the course students should have:

  • The ability to create and organise aesthetic material
  • The ability to solve problems
  • The ability to apply theory to practice
  • The capacity to interpret and analyse
  • The capacity to communicate orally and in writing.

Course Progression Guidelines

The maximum time permitted for completion of the course is two years.

The progress of a student shall be deemed to be unsatisfactory if the student obtains two successive fails in any one subject.

PERFORMANCE PROJECTS C

Subject description:

In this subject students are able to further extend their technical and creative knowledge within a production environment. Students are assigned to at least two major placements on productions in positions requiring a high degree of leadership mounted either within or beyond the College. It will also require the preparation and realisation of an essay - either in written form or alternatively expressed - related to one of the projects to which they have been assigned.

Objectives:

On completion of this subject the student should be able to:

  • demonstrate strong creative and technical skills
  • effectively plan and organise work and solve problems
  • effectively communicate in oral and written form
  • exhibit strong ability to lead a team as well as participate at a high level as a crew member of a collaborative team, while respecting individual differences
  • apply specific knowledge to a complex practical project
  • exhibit strong knowledge of the performing arts industries

Assessment:

Performance work(s) (60%);
Essay or written materials and tasks equivalent 10,000 words (40%).

PERFORMANCE TECHNIQUES C

Subject description:

This subject is an extension of material from Performance Techniques B in the Postgraduate Diploma of Production. Classes may focus on specific issues and problems arising from projects which the student has been assigned in Performance Projects C.

Objectives:

On completion of this subject, students should be able to:

  • exhibit a specialist area of knowledge in the performance arts industries, at a high level
  • exhibit a capacity to design, conduct and present original research
  • communicate effectively both orally and in writing. 

Assessment:

The realisation of practical studies (70%), and written assignments and reports equivalent to 4000 words (30%).
