Dr Barry Bignell

Barry Bignell received his tertiary education at the Royal Military School of Music, Kneller Hall, London, where he was awarded the Director's Prize for conducting, the Instrumental Prize and the Best Overseas Student Award. He completed his Master of Education at the University of Melbourne.

Dr Bignall studied conducting with Maurice Miles at the Royal Academy of Music and at summer schools in Switzerland and France. For seven years he was Music Director of the Australian Army Band (Melbourne).

In 1984 Barry was the recipient of a Goethe Institute scholarship and he studied repertoire with the Berlin Philharmonic and the Berlin State Opera. In addition to freelance conducting work, Barry Bignell is active as a composer and arranger. His research interests are musical cognition and epistemology.
