David started freelancing in theatre lighting and as a grip and camera operator on commercial film productions whilst completing his architecture degree. He subsequently chose to follow Film and Television as a career, going on to write, direct and edit his own independent productions along with educational documentaries for RMIT and Phillip Institute.
Joining AAV Australia (now Digital Pictures) in 1982 he was to work in Videotape, SBS Master Control and Telecine prior to becoming a Technical Director responsible for major commercial clients including GMH, Myer and the Liberal Party. Other production work included Nightmoves and WROK for Network 10, FraggleRock for Jim Henson and Associates and numerous video clips, commercials and documentaries.
David's time as a Technical Director also saw him involved with the introduction of Ultimatte real time blue screen technology and the Quantel Paint Box into the Australian industry.
Technical direction of live productions included "Cleo Laine at the Concert Hall", Little River Band for HBO, and Peter Faiman's "Australia Live". David oversaw extensive blue screen work for TVCs and for GMH video disk projects, whilst undertaking personal work on the Video Paint Brush company's Paintbox.
Joining the School of Film and Television in 1986, David has subsequently taught in both the undergraduate and graduate strands. He continues to play a significant role in the introduction of new technologies to the School. From the introduction of computer based editing in 1987 through to the move to digital and interactive-media technologies in 1996 David has overseen the introduction of new methodologies across all strands in the School.
In 1998 David introduced and taught the Graduate Diploma in Interactive Media and introduced the Visual Effects course in 2001.
Currently teaching the Graduate Diploma of Film and Television (Visual Effects) with the assistance of guest lecturers from industry, David is both Post Production Coordinator and Postgraduate Coordinator for the School of Film and Television.
