Research
Contents
Research in contemporary art is based on intellectual and artistic experimentation and contestation, and encourages a challenge to limits of art and its practices, and extends our knowledge of the disciplines that make up the field of art. The research outcomes involve a broad spectrum of forms, including experimental studio practice and exhibition strategies through to innovative uses of technology in the creation of new work. Research in the VCA Art setting is characterised by diverse research outputs and can at times occur in collaboration with other disciplines, such as film and popular culture, information systems and the sciences or disciplines in the humanities. Contemporary art research typically engages with broad social and cultural agendas and includes a strong focus on public presentations. The VCA follows the broad OECD definition of research that defines research as 'creative work undertaken on a systematic basis in order to increase the stock of knowledge, including knowledge of man, culture and society, and the use of this stock of knowledge to devise new applications'.

Research activity in the discipline is produced by academics and research higher degree students, and new work is presented to the public in the VCA Margaret Lawrence Gallery, often with accompanying catalogue and scholarly essays.

The research culture of VCA Art is integrated into the teaching program at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. What is taught at VCA Art is not so much a specific body of knowledge about art and artistic practice, but the methods for acquiring and testing that knowledge. In essence, research methods. Staff research and artistic practice is therefore not just relevant to teaching, or a desirable adjunct to teaching; it is the very core of what is taught.

VCA Art postgraduate programs have consistently produced exciting and committed artists. Many of its graduates have established national and international profiles. The postgraduate community provides a supportive environment and its programs seek to stimulate and challenge at an individual level while providing a forum for debate around a wide range of contemporary cultural issues. Research projects that seek to examine and contextualise individual practice relative to recent developments in national, regional and international contemporary art are specifically encouraged.
