Art Short Courses in Melbourne
In 2008 VCA Art afterhours is running the following programs:
These programs are designed to introduce people with a passion for visual art to a wide range of contemporary art forms. All classes are taught by leading contemporary artists and are suitable for both the experienced and beginner artist. All classes utilise the facilities and surrounds of VCA Art, allowing you to immerse yourself at the institution where so many of Australia's leading visual artists begin their careers.
Studio Art Program
The Studio Art Program provides opportunities for people with an interest in contemporary art to explore their own artwork at a level that suits their needs. The program is an excellent introduction to the practice and study of fine art. It provides an opportunity to develop the skills and knowledge to prepare for further independent research.
Students may choose between the following four classes:
- Contemporary Painting
- Sculpture
- Drawing
- New Media
Lecturers will work with their students in extending and nurturing their artwork both materially and conceptually. Students will major in either 2D, 3D or digital/photographic studies, and will occasionally work in groups and attend workshops to develop specific skills. In term four we will focus on our end of year exhibition that takes place in the student gallery in the last week of the course. In 2008 we include a folio preparation component that has an emphasis on working with students who specifically wish to enter a degree course in fine art in 2009.
This course welcomes everyone, no matter what your skill level. Passion and an ability to work independently are important, as is the desire to develop your own ideas, experience and relationship with contemporary art. Your lecturer will build a program to suit you. Class sizes are usually 10-15 students.
Classes are held on Tuesday nights and start at 6.00pm. They finish at 9.00pm.
Cost: Four terms: $2,500 or $650 per term (prices include GST)
Academy Art Program
The Academy Art Program provides students with an opportunity to explore the technical and conceptual possibilities of painting and drawing in a supportive yet critical environment. We have two classes running throughout the year in 2008: Life Drawing Now and Painting in the 21st Century. Both classes examine the historical and traditional methods of the mediums, as well as providing expert and updated knowledge about how to work creatively with these mediums today.
Life Drawing Now, through the exploration of the human form, will teach you in a practical way about methods of measurement, scale and space; about form, line and tone and address the endless possibilities, not to mention the rigorous discipline, that working with the human body requires.
Painting in the 21st Century will explore a wide range of practical techniques including the use of oil, acrylic, enamel and spray paints. You will learn to prepare a variety of painting surfaces, including canvas, wood, aluminium, paper and Perspex. Brush, stencil and varnishing techniques will also be delivered. Discussion and debate about the traditional and complex medium of paint is an important part of the course.
Classes are taught by expert, practising artists. The Academy Art Program is ideal for the student who wishes to consolidate, refresh and fine-tune their own skills and who enjoys working in a structured environment. The classes are also suitable for the beginner artist; your lecturer will assist you in getting started.
Classes are held on Thursday nights and start at 6.00pm. They finish at 9.00pm.
Cost: Four terms: $2,500 or $650 per term (prices include GST)
