Bachelor of Fine Arts (Theatre Practice)
The Bachelor of Fine Arts (Theatre Practice) is an intensive actor training program that will develop you into an autonomous actor able to interpret established texts, as well as, generate and perform new material.
In the first year you integrate imagination, voice and body skills and apply these in a range of performance contexts. You explore creating performance from the self and develop strategies for the interpretation of text.
The second year continues to develop your kinaesthetic and perceptual awareness in performance. By the third year you will have consolidated a working methodology as an autonomous actor. You will complete performance projects culminating in a festival of new work.
The program is taught in the VCA's specially designed Performing Arts building in Southbank, next door to the Melbourne Theatre Company. It has seven studio spaces, a studio theatre and study rooms.
On completion of the third year, qualified students may decide to hone their professional acting or theatre-making practice by continuing into a specialised fourth year of study in the Theatre Practice Honours program.
VCA Theatre and Production students talk about 'Article 1', a new work inspired by 'Antigone' by Sophocles, devised by Acting Company 2012 with Bagryana Popov and designed by Third Year Production students.
Our graduates work at all levels of the theatre, film and television industries, and are renowned for their capacity to work creatively and collaboratively, in both traditional and groundbreaking performance contexts. Students establish careers in professional theatre, community arts and education, film, television, radio, new media and theatre in education.
