Postgraduate Students

Postgraduate Facilities at the VCA
There are computers available in the Postgraduate Lounge in the VCA Hub which are reserved for use by postgraduate students only. A laser printer is also available for postgrad use in this area on a 'you supply the paper' basis.

Postgraduate Facilities at the University of Melbourne
The University of Melbourne Postgraduate Association (UMPA) provides information on computing facilities at the University of Melbourne that are available to VCA postgraduate students on the UMPA web site.

All VCA postgraduate students have access to the School of Graduate Studies (SGS) located on the University Campus in Parkville (corner of Grattan and Swanston Sts). The SGS web site contains information about the various services (including IT) on offer and many links to research resources throughout the University of Melbourne.

Postgraduate Student Dial-up Accounts

VCA postgraduate students in award courses are able to take advantage of the remote dial-up facilities at the University of Melbourne.

Dial-up accounts are not available to undergraduate and non-award students at the VCA.

The process is as follows:

  • Postgraduate students need to contact the I.T. Coordinator in order to fill out a 'Request for Computing Services' form for submission to: ITS, University of Melbourne, 800 Swanston St, Carlton. Forms can be picked up from the VCA Hub Lab Supervisor.
  • Only the IT Coordinator is authorised to sign forms requesting postgraduate dial-up services from ITS. Other sigatures will not be accepted by ITS.
  • Accounts are usually set up directly on submission of the form to ITS Operations.
  • You will then be issued a user name and password to access the dial-up system. Once activated, you can use your dial-up account.

Please note that there is currently no on-campus support for dial-up access at the VCA. Students who have not had any experience connecting to a remote dial-up system can find additional help and printable technical support sheets at:
http://www.infodiv.unimelb.edu.au/compss/support/dialin.html

In addition, ITS (800 Swanston St, Carlton) will look at and/or set up computers for a fee of around $70 per hour. You will need to make a booking for this service.
