Offering a terrific range of week-long courses in Acting and Performance Making. Come and have great fun in the challenging and inspiring environment of VCA Drama.

Each morning starts with specialist voice and movement workshops, followed by your chosen specialisation each afternoon. The experienced and dynamic consultant staff of VCA Drama teach all courses.

Secondary Students (to 16 years)

The Actor’s Craft
Jun 30 – July 4, 2008 or Jan 12 – 16, 2009
Explore fundamental skills for the actor in a playful and supportive environment. Discover the expressive qualities of your body and voice through a combination of games, improvisation, characterisation and text.

Creating Character
Jun 30 – July 4, 2008 or Jan 12 – 16, 2009
Intro to Acting or similar experience is recommended
A step-by-step approach to creating expressive, truthful characters. Learn through rehearsing a contemporary scene using improvisation, physical and imaginative exercises. This fun series of explorations and practical exercises will enable you to bring emotional depth to any role you play.

Acting to Camera – Introduction
Jun 30 – July 4, 2008 or Jan 12 – 16, 2009
Work directly to camera on a variety of scripts. Create compelling performances for film and television. Learn the subtle art of being natural on screen and about screen tests, audition techniques and industry expectations.

Impro & Physical Comedy
Mon 7 – Fri 11 July, 2008
Keep your acting spontaneous, creative and alive. Impro is a vital technique for all actors. Live in the moment and develop skills in yielding, making and accepting offers, status, character and scene work. Integrate the body and imagination to discover ways physical impro can be expressed in comedy.

Audition Techniques for Film & TV
Mon 7 – Fri 11 July, 2008
Learn how to prepare and perfect your screen testing technique. Work intensively in front of camera on a variety of scenes and acting exercises. Be introduced to various audition situations and industry expectations.
The Actor’s Craft & Acting to Camera or similar experience required.

VCE Drama Students

VCE Drama Unit 4 – Solo Performance
Mon 7 – Fri 11 July, 2008
An intensive workshop led by an industry professional with VCE assessment criteria knowledge that will help you to get the best out of your solo performance. Learn how to generate ideas and develop them into a compelling piece of theatre. Explore character, performance style, theatrical conventions and dramatic elements.

VCE Drama Unit 3 – Ensemble Performance
Jan 12 – 16, 2009
An intensive workshop led by an industry professional with VCE assessment criteria knowledge. Learn how to analyse non-naturalistic performance through the exploration of character, style, convention and the use of dramatic and stagecraft elements. Explore non-naturalistic dramatic form and ensemble practice through the experience of making a new piece of theatre.

Adults (17 years +)

The Actor’s Process
Jun 30 – July 4, 2008 or Jan 12 – 16, 2009
Focus on the actor’s process from rehearsal to performance. Build a tool kit that will help you approach any role with confidence. Work on scenes and learn how the structure, language and subtext can serve you to tell story and develop character.

Impro & Physical Theatre
Jun 30 – July 4, 2008
Impro is a vital technique for all actors. Keep your acting spontaneous, creative and alive. Integrate the body, imagination and impulse to discover ways the physical can be woven into a narrative, character driven structure.

Revealing Character
Mon 7 – Fri 11 July, 2008 or Jan 12 – 16, 2009
Break the boundaries of expressing character and interpreting text. Develop methods of creating the physical and psychological worlds of characters and scenes through the exploration of a range of imaginative and sensory provocations.

Acting to Camera – On Screen
Mon 7 – Fri 11 July, 2008 or Jan 12 – 16, 2009
Develop your natural screen presence. Build compelling screen performances using a variety of scripts. Work directly to camera. Learn about screen tests, audition techniques and industry expectations.

The Actor’s Lab
Mon 7 – Fri 11 July, 2008 or Jan 12 – 16, 2009
Minimum Age 20
An advanced exploration into the actor’s process. Learn how to reveal the interior world of the text through action and improvisation. Develop performance through active analysis leading to an organic, believable, human presence for theatre, film or television.
