Courses at the Faculty of the Victorian College of the Arts are structured, that is, each year’s subjects are largely prescribed. The Schedule of Courses and Fees for 2009 shows the fixed structure of each course and course year under the following headings:
Subject code - This is the computer code for the subject. This code will appear on all documents regarding your subject enrolment.
Subject title - The name of the subject
Load - The weighting of the subject as a proportion of a full-time load for the year which is normally 1.0000
Fee Rate 2009 - The fee rate shown represents the discipline band in which the subject sits for CSP (Commonwealth Supported Place), AF (Australian Fee Paying place) and OF (Overseas Fee Paying place). This is the fee rate for one year.
CSP - Commonwealth Supported Place. This is the amount of HECS paid per subject.
Subject Price 2009 - Derived by multiplying the subject load by the fee rate for each of the categories of CSP (Commonwealth Supported Place), AF (Australian Fee Paying place) and OF (Overseas Fee Paying place)
All amounts shown are Australian dollars.
Fees are reassessed each year based on cost and demand factors, but the University guarantees that these fees will not increase by more than 10% in any year.
Example 1 – Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP) undergraduate
Simon is an Australian citizen with a Commonwealth Supported place (CSP) who enrols in the Bachelor of Dance in 2009. The total load of the subjects in this fixed course year is 1.0000. The fee for Gary’s place is $5,2015 in 2009. He can pay this amount up-front and receive a 20% discount, make a partial payment of no less than $500 and receive a 20% discount on the part paid, or he can defer the payment under the HECS-HELP scheme.
Example 2 – Australian fee paying postgraduate (AF)
Andrew is an Australian fee paying student who enrols in the Postgraduate Diploma in Performance Creation in 2009. The total load of the subjects in this fixed course year is 1.0000. The tuition fee for this course is $10,950. Andrew can pay his fees in two instalments and, as an Australian citizen, Andrew may also elect to apply for a loan through the FEE-HELP scheme to assist with the payment of his fees. Application for FEE-HELP takes place as part of the enrolment process.
Example 3 – International fee paying undergraduate (OF)
Leigh is an International fee paying student who enrols in the Bachelor of Fine Art in 2009. The total load of the subjects in this fixed course year is 1.0000. Leigh’s fees are calculated as:
| 6 x subjects |
@0.0625 | x $20,800 | =$7,800 |
| 2 x subjects |
@0.3125 |
x $20,800 |
=$13,000 |
| $20,800 |
(As a Bachelor of Fine Art student Leigh may also pay a voluntary Materials Levy of approximately $400 depending on her specialisation.)
Leigh must pay her fees up-front in accordance with the payment schedule advised in her letter of offer.
Equipment bonds are payable for courses in Film and Television.
Depending on which course is chosen for study, material costs will arise when students undertake their projects. Students are required to provide most of their own materials. The cost of these can be in excess of $1,000 per year. In certain areas the costs can be considerably higher. For example, the costs associated with the Photography specialisation in the Bachelor of Fine Art course may be between $3,000 and $4,000 per year. VCA Art conducts a voluntary materials levy scheme that allows the Faculty to purchase class materials in bulk on behalf of students.
Students may have to pay some additional costs associated with purchase of text books, study guides and photocopy costs.

All tuition fees are paid to The University of Melbourne. A Student Invoice showing the payment due and the payment methods available is sent to students when they have completed the enrolment process for the course year. International students are required to pay at least the first instalment of fees in order to accept the offer of a place in a course.
