The Victorian College of the Arts School of Film & Television last night announced the winners of the inaugural EH Shepard Animation Awards.
The Trust of Ernest Howard Shepard (1879-1976) - a man universally loved for bringing A.A Milne's Winnie the Pooh books to life with his vivid illustrations of the bear and his companions - set up the award for students at the VCA to recognise excellence and innovation in illustration for animation.
Excellence in Drawing for Animation was won by Tom Fraser, the Innovation In Drawing for Animation Award was won by Elka Kerkhof. Rosalie Osman was Highly Commended. The three winners will share in the $6000 prize money.
All applicants were required to submit a screenplay, a draft storyboard and production design sketches. The entries were assessed by Sue Stamp in Drawing at VCA Art, Dennis Tupicoff, an acclaimed Melbourne animator and the animation staff at the VCA.
